Industry clusters deliver jobs and economic growth.
Specific targeted industry clusters and sectors have been identified as offering significant opportunities for economic development. These include the skyrocketing sector of tourism as well as agriculture, technology (including green technology and renewable energy), healthcare and health related services, and arts and culture. Under the umbrella of arts and culture are the performing and visual arts — with concerts, events, museums, exhibitions and galleries — as well as Native American culture combined with historic preservation, among others.
Tourism, by any standard, is flourishing. With explosive growth during the past decade, tourism in our region remains the largest industry sector. Having surpassed the $6 billion mark, it is increasingly year-round, moving beyond the limits of peak season to create a consistent source of taxable revenues as well as more than 50,000 jobs.
Our combination of international events, from the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to Stagecoach Country Music Festival, the Palm Springs Film Festival and Modernism Week, have given rise to a whole new realm of experiential tourism.
Add to that world-class sporting events from the BNP Paribas Tennis Open to the Careerbuilder Challenger and others, and you’ve got a winning destination. Not to mention other big-draw events such as Fashion Week and the Rhythm, Wine and Brews event.
With one-of-a-kind destinations such as The Living Desert, the Empire Polo Club and Joshua Tree National Park, along with more than 100 of some of the world’s finest golf courses, few sun-drenched destinations can rival the area. With hiking and biking trails, a host of outdoor activities, and more dining and shopping destinations than ever before, expect exceptional across the board.
A heritage of agriculture and farming has helped develop the East Valley region and continues to be a vital and fertile part of the area’s economy. In fact, agricultural crops in the eastern region were valued at an annual amount approaching $800 million. One of the richest growing regions in the world, the East Valley’s continuous warm desert climate and irrigation systems make it a primary supplier of produce for millions of people.
Reliable yields of fruits and vegetables including 95% of the world’s date production are a source of revenue. Here, farmworkers live and work seasonally or year-round to work in the fields.
It is common knowledge that this region is a great producer of table grapes, mangos, peaches, tomatoes, watermelon, melon, cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, corn spinach, cauliflower, garlic, onion, green beans, strawberries, celery, potatoes, bell peppers, and all manner of citrus including lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit. While the county’s economic profile is diversifying, agriculture remains a vital mainstay of our economy.
The healthcare and health services industry has long been a reliable and lucrative source of jobs and opportunities in the Coachella Valley. From physicians and nurses to assisted living and healthcare helpers, facilities and hospitals, labs, clinics and private practice, the gamut of services are available.
Desert Regional Medical Center, Eisenhower Medical Center, and JFK Memorial Hospital are the primary facilities for the healthcare community which includes a cross-selection of medical groups and wellness, rehabilitation, and health-centric spas and fitness centers. Our hospitals are highly ranked by established organizations in the industry and offer exceptional opportunities for qualified candidates.
Further, nursing and health related programs are available in the area including programs at higher education institutions including the College of the Desert and California State University San Bernardino, Palm Desert, which offers two complete degree nursing programs.
From digital technology to green technology and renewable energy, the East Valley is a prime location. Through our extended partnerships, you’ll find access to incubators and financing for tech startups, which have been designated as a priority industry cluster and sector.
Further, we are adjacent to the largest federal solar energy zone in the United States in a region that enjoys virtually year-round sunshine. Looking forward, we are committed to developing environmental technologies and renewable energy that will serve our population now and for generations to come.
